About Us
SHIKARA DESIGN and KASBAH IMPORTS is a continuously changing collection of mystical art, sculpture, achitectural features, furniture, decor items and rugs from the East.We stock a range of pieces that reflect an enormous mythological and religious heritage whilst at the same time having a unique aspect of design.
We have a large warehouse and showroom at 242 Montague Rd West End, Brisbane Queensland where we land our containers. This warehouse is open to both wholesale and retail clients. THIS OUTLET WILL BE CLOSING TO RETAIL CLIENTS AT THE END OF JULY 2009....BY APPOINTMENT ONLY IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER UNTIL WE CLOSE THE OUTLET.
Directors are Mohan Govindasamy and Julian Millane, who between us have over 70 years experience in the East both as travellers and traders in all that is to offer from a myriad of amazing craftspeople.
We both have a passionate love affair with India and her people, the temples and the culture in general. We also have a long history of business in Java and have set up a production chain there using recycled timbers to create magnificently carved and stylish furniture at extremely reasonable prices.
Along with the huge range of furniture and furnishings we have managed to gather a collection of pieces that have artistic appeal and 'spiritual' significance, some of the works being made by India's finest sculptors contributing to a large collection of mystical art and tantric art, with more shipments arriving every day.
We are also in the enviable position of being manufacturers with a purpose built factory in Jodphur India shipping worldwide. There we have a group of skilled carpenters and artists, producing furniture and architectural pieces from kiln dried hardwoods. Many are made using old pieces such as doors and columns, making every piece a unique piece. We commonly receive commissions for domestic and larger projects.
We are often onsite in India, Pakistan and Indonesia co-ordinating the consolidation of containers that may contain many elements of our business.
We also invite our clients who may wish to come there and work with us to consolidate containers which we will ship anywhere in the world. We are receiving huge interest in our products from the USA and are urging anyone who is interested in setting up there to contact us. It is not viable to ship individual large items, so there is a huge opening for someone who wants to set up a store in the USA or any other country for that matter. Check out our Export India page on this site - which is not limited to India.
In 2006 we introduced our magnificent travelling show "Touch of the Mystic" which was a huge success and well attended and received. One of our aims for 2010 is to hold more shows in various areas of Australia, and indeed worldwide, showcasing our amazing products from a disappearing world.
"The dream is universal, it is not my own. It is centuries old - or you can say, it is eternal. The earth began to see that dream with the dawning of the very first rays of human consciousness. How many flowers are strung in the garland of this dream - how many Gautam Buddhas, Mahaviras, Kabirs and Nanaks have sacrificed their lives for this dream? How am I to call that dream mine? That dream is the dream of man himself. We have given this dream a name - we call this dream India.''
