Lakshmi
Consort of the great Hindu god, Vishnu. She is the goddess
of wealth and good fortune. During the Hindu celebration, Diwali,
the festival of lights, lanterns are lit and fireworks exploded to
please the goddess. The goddess is said to visit houses which are well lit.
Lakshmi is sometimes associated with Indra and her presence is believed
by some to bring fertility. There is a legend of Indra pouring rain on
the land with Lakshmi by his side so the crops flourished. Lakshmi appears
in the great tale of creation, the churning the ocean, appearing on a lotus flower.
The Lakshmi Deepa lamps are lit all across India and the east to attract the mighty Deva’s blessings in households and businesses alike. The Deepa bowl is filled with ghee and a wick placed in the oil and lit, during one of the most colourful and holy festivals in the Hindu calendar.
